Photographing/Videoing the Zombie Horde

Every walk, especially around Comic-Con, we receive many requests from photographers and videographers looking to capture the zombies via their chosen medium. And we are happy to oblige almost all requests, however, we ask photographers and videographers – both professional & amateur – familiarize themselves with the following:

* I’m a photographer/videographer and would like to take pictures of/film the walk. Can I? Where can I go to do this?
Yes, we love photos & video. Zombies are hams and we enjoy playing to the cameras. Unfortunately, we do not have a specific staging area for most of our walks. If we do have one, it will be included in the individual walk details. If there is no such information, please plan on tagging along with the group; remember to not stop our group at any time and don’t block the flow of regular foot/vehicle traffic. Please do not ask zombies – even small groups or individuals – to stop “for a quick picture” along the walk route, as they will fall behind the horde and it creates more chaos than already exists (as well as impeding the flow of traffic).

* Where can I best view the zombies?
This depends on the walk route. We don’t have a regular walk route, other than when we’re in the Gaslamp Quarter. For Comic-Con, we generally stick to 5th Avenue in the Gaslamp Quarter. For these walks, we highly suggest patronizing one of the MANY fine eating establishments along 5th Avenue and asking for patio seating. You will get a GREAT view of the zombies and enjoy a delicious meal at the same time!

* Can I take photos or video of your zombies to sell and/or promote my killer item/idea/movie?
You are NOT welcome to use ANY photos or video you have taken at the walk/event for commercial purposes unless you have permission (a signed release) from ZombieWalk:SanDiego in advance AND you have the subject(s)/their guardian(s) sign a model release. If you or anyone you know shoots pictures and/or video for non-commercial or commercial purposes, please contact us afterward, so that we can post it (with credit and a link to your site, of course)! Zombies love to see themselves in action.

* Can I hire your zombies to promote my killer item/idea or participate in my zombie movie/photoshoot/etc.?
YES! We regularly cast zombies from all over southern California, for everything from music videos to movies to web series (+ everything in between) and to participate in guerrilla marketing solutions & promotional events. Feel free to send us a message with specific details on your project and we’ll get back to you ASAP. We’re also available for photoshoots, should your portfolio need some undead awesomeness!

—–
This is what we advise our zombies of, as participants in the walk:

* Having your photo taken as a participant:
By participating in the walk, you acknowledge that you are aware that face and/or likeness will be posted all over the internet and elsewhere and that you’re cool with it. We will point out our zombie-approved photographers at the beginning of each walk (onward from October 2010).

Please ask for credentials and contact information from anyone taking your photo. Make sure to ask if they are taking it for commercial purposes. This means they will be profiting off of your image in some manner, whether attempting to sell you the print or selling the digital image file to you or other people.

You have a right to refuse to participate in the photograph if it is for commercial purposes and/or if they will not show you their credentials. Do not allow them to tell you differently. Feel free to block the shot (as long as you don’t touch the photographer or their equipment) by holding your hand or a prop up to block your face or by turning your back or by walking away.

We do not encourage commercial photography at our events, because we know you put in a lot of time, effort, and money into outfits & makeup, so we disagree with the idea of photographers being able to make a large profit and not sharing it with you for your hard work. The walks/events are for YOU to have FUN, not for them to pay their bills :)

—–

The zombie participants have the right to refuse your photo/video request. Please respect that. Do not chase the zombies, do not ask them to do anything which violates our walk guidelines or actual laws. Use your common sense and be respectful of the horde. We hold these walks for the participants and spectators to have fun. Not so you can pay your bills or get free action shots for your zombie movie from unpaid & uncredited (and unauthorized) extras. If you are press/media, please be sure to credit us properly (ZombieWalk:SanDiego) and consider including a link to our website and/or our Facebook. It would be greatly appreciated.

As long as you are willing to follow the above guidelines, we are more than willing to have you accompany us on our walk and we look forward to eating… errr… meeting you!

Con of the Dead – #ZOMBIFYSDCC Afterparty!

Friday, July 13th, 2012 * 6:00PM – 9:00PM * Voyeur * 755 Fifth Ave. San Diego, CA
INVITE ONLY – 300 zombies will get in!

FEARnet, the leading cable destination for horror, thriller and suspense content, will team with Capcom® and its upcoming Resident Evil® 6 video game and MPI’s Dark Sky Films to celebrate the horror genre at Comic-Con this year, hosting “Con-of-the Dead,” an evening party saluting both fans and industry insiders, alike. This invitation-only party will fittingly take place Friday, July 13, at San Diego’s gothic-inspired Voyeur nightclub from 6 to 8:30 PM PT.

“Con-of-the-Dead” guests will experience an interactive event complete with playable demo stations featuring Resident Evil 6, a VIP suite decked out by Dark Sky Films, music spun by LA’s DJ Amanda Jones, go-go ghoul dancers, customized refreshments and ‘zombie-fied’ photo booth.

FANGORIA Entertainment, Screamfest Horror Film Festival and horror-centric websites, DreadCentral.com and Shocktillyoudrop.com will co-sponsor the event, with other partnerships soon to be announced.

FEARnet will team up with the 6th Annual Zombie Walk: San Diego, where 300 participating zombies will win admittance to FEARnet’s “Con-of-the-Dead” party taking place that same evening. The lucky undead winners will be able to enter the event after completing the walk in San Diego’s historic Gaslamp District. Details on how to win will be announced soon!

Peter Block, President and General Manager of FEARnet, is enthusiastic about the network’s inclusion in the Comic-Con festivities. “Our main goal at Comic-Con is to build an event that would allow fans to engage with our network firsthand,” Block said. “We are excited for the chance to showcase our network to invited members of the media and entertainment industry, as well as selected participants from San Diego’s famous Zombie Walk.”

The emerging network, now in more than seven million U.S. homes, is expanding into San Diego on June 30, as part of Cox Communications’ continued FEARnet rollout. FEARnet will be viewed on Cox’s Movie Pak at channel position 311 prior to the start of the international convention.

“Cox Communications is an important provider for our rapidly growing popular network,” said Block. “We’re thrilled to be distributed on the third-largest cable company in the U.S. as part of Cox’s Movie Pak and exclusively deliver genre-themed content in time for ‘Comic-Con.’ Residents there have a deep appreciation for the genre and we’re thrilled to be able to bring them over 300 movie titles a year from our robust film library.”

In addition, cast members of FEARnet’s first original TV series, “Holliston,” featuring Adam Green, Joe Lynch, Corri English, Laura Ortiz and GWAR front man Oderus Urungus will also be on hand, taking part in a panel presentation hosted by a surprise celebrity moderator on Thursday, July 12th, from 8:30 to 9:30 PM.

FEARnet will cover the latest genre news at Comic-Con, and continue to produce original content for FEARnet.com, its VOD channel and linear TV network. FEARnet’s coverage of Comic-Con is sponsored by Capcom’s Resident Evil 6, which will be infecting stores on October 2, 2012 and is currently available for pre-order.

March For Undead Rights at Comic-Con! #ZOMBIFYSDCC!

Are you ready to #ZOMBIFYSDCC?! We are! Zombies have been exploited in entertainment and media for too long! The undead deserve equal rights and should be treated as fairly as the living actors who portray us in pictures, television shows, movies, and sporting events! We want the right to marry the living as well as the dead. We want access to acceptable memorials should we be offed by rogue zombie hunters; cremating our bodies and/or leaving us by the side of the road isn’t going to cut it anymore. Most importantly, we want a respectable supply of food.

Shunned, starving, and unloved zombies are the past. We, the undead, are the future and we MUST march to secure our rights! While the living occupy for their voices to be heard… we must zombify and it begins during Comic-Con 2012 with America’s Finest Undead at the MARCH FOR UNDEAD RIGHTS!

When discussing the walk and/or sharing pictures, please use the hashtag #zombifysdcc on Twitter, Instagram, etc. so we can spread the word we want equal rights for the undead!

WHEN:
– Friday, July 13th, 2012 @ 5:30PM.
– Arrive at the meeting location beginning at 5:00PM and no later than 5:20PM.
– The zombiewalk begins at 5:30PM sharp, so do NOT be late.
– Please do not arrive any earlier than 4:30PM, as we don’t want to cause a ruckus beforehand.

WHERE:
– We will meet at the corner of 4th & Broadway, in downtown San Diego, to take over the historic Gaslamp Quarter to show the world we aren’t going down without a growl.
– The meeting location is within walking distance of the San Diego Convention Center. If you’re coming from other locations around San Diego, public transportation (SDMTS) is readily available. There are also MANY parking lots in the area, but their pricing will be high and spaces are limited. We strongly urge use of public transportation or carpooling.
– To get to the meeting location from the Convention Center, walk north (straight) up Fifth Avenue until you get to Broadway. Walk one block and cross the street and you will see palm trees in a large open area next to a shopping center. You’re there!
– If you are using public transportation, go to SDMTS and use “Horton Plaza” as your destination. You will find us on the corner of Fourth Avenue and Broadway, near the Sam Goody, outside Horton Plaza and across from the U.S. Grant Hotel.

HOW:
– We invite zombies to bring signs, placards, and banners advertising zombie rights. Be clever with slogans and demand equal rights for those of us who still shamble among the living. Please refrain from using profanity/explicit language, as there will be many children in our presence. Common sense is important; despite being zombies, we need to show respect in order to get respect from those around us and we thank you in advance for exercising your best judgment with your #ZOMBIFYSDCC signs!
– As always, the walk is ALL-AGES and FREE of charge to participate. The zombiewalk is open to everyone, not just convention attendees, no badges required! Remember… the more the scarier! This is the perfect way to participate in the fun of Comic-Con without actually entering the convention itself, as you get to dress up and be among fun-loving and entertaining individuals from all backgrounds. This is why we put the walk together year after year!
– Please come dressed and made-up as a zombie. If you need makeup/supplies, please visit Gypsy Treasure, in La Mesa, and tell ’em the zombiewalk sent you!
– We strongly encourage you to get creative with your own outfit & makeup BEFORE the walk as there will be NO onsite assistance with zombification. We are working on possible zombification options for you prior to the walk itself… stay tuned for more details.
– Please be sure to check out our walk guidelines. They are important to make sure we have a walk that is fun & safe for everyone involved and/or watching… and ensures our ability to continue holding zombiewalks in San Diego. We’ve had a great six years, so let’s make sure we can have many more!

Please follow us on Twitter for up to the minute news! We’ll see you on July 13th!

OTHER FAQ:
Q: Will there be a pre-party/afterparty?
A: AFTERPARTY INFORMATION IS COMING ON JUNE 13th! STAY TUNED! We can’t wait to share details with you… this party is going to be on a completely new level of undead mayhem, instilling FEAR into the hearts and minds of those lucky enough to attend!  AFTERPARTY INFORMATION HERE! More details to come soon!

Q: Will the party be all-ages like the walk or 21+?
A: It will be 21+

Q: Where can I best view the zombies?
A: This is something we are working on for this year. We’ll let you know more details when it pans out. Otherwise… please check our FAQ.

Q: Why Friday instead of Saturday like usual?
A: There are several reasons – mostly to do with Comic-Con programming and related events (Masquerade being one), as well as offsite events, occurring on Saturday afternoon/night which would diminish attendance at our event – we have decided to hold the walk & afterparty on Friday this year. We are also giving plenty of warning about the day, so people have plenty of time to adjust their schedules as necessary (and if possible), so they can leave work early (if need be) to prepare for the walk. We understand that we can’t please everyone and have fielded some disappointment about Saturday walks in the past, so we’re giving the Friday people a chance this year… besides… FRIDAY THE THIRTEENTH! :D

Afterparty information coming soon…
